Inappropriate?There's soon to be a 3rd party app for maemo which looks very promising! Have a search for "Barriosquare"

Inappropriate?You can also use web based clients as well, some of them are actually pretty close to native FourSquare client on iphone or android. (i guess it thanks to html5)
The one i use is called "Cotchin", they seem to be more focus on Maemo. www.cotchin.com
BTW, you will need to activate geolocation of your n900 browser. Quite simple though, here's the how-to:
