Thanks for the ideas. I like the idea of providing a little more explanation around the search box to make it more intuitive. I think that adding simple explanations like that will help tremendously! We'll implement that change when we update the header with the site navigation (soon!)...

You're so right. The site navigation is difficult to find and access, and we're looking at ways to incorporate some sort of a toolbar at the top of the page near the search box. We'll get cracking on it! :)
